Volunteering for us is an opportunity to help make a visit to The Library Theatre luton the best night out in town for all our audience members.
By volunteering your Front of House skills – whether at the Box Office, behind the bar, ticketing or ushering – you will become part of a team of theatre-loving people of all ages keen to make the audience experience as welcoming off-stage as it is exciting on-stage.
As a member of the FOH team you will be directly in contact with our audiences and be part a core part of the friendly team who make up the face of the Library theatre.
You will be integral in forming the culture of the venue with every interaction you make. As well as making new friends, there is the chance to watch a number of our professional shows for free.

Most of our volunteer roles don’t require previous experience. And providing you’re over 18, age isn’t a barrier. Our volunteers range from teenagers to octogenarians. You certainly don’t need to be an expert in theatre, or even be a keen theatregoer.
All performance volunteers are required to act as Fire Marshals, who sit in the show and act as ushers during the performances.
The only qualifications you need are good interpersonal skills, a friendly disposition and a love of live performance of all kinds.

If you have a welcoming smile, enjoy being with people and can supervise a team, we would love to hear from you! The main purpose of the Duty Manager is to ensure the smooth-running of the Front of House operation for a specific event by leading a team of volunteers in being the welcoming, friendly face of The Library Theatre for the audience and offering a high standard of customer care. This role will suit someone who is: reliable and punctual; has a positive and engaging personality and is able to relate well to a diverse range of people; can motivate and supervise a team of volunteers; is able to take responsibility and respond to problems calmly and assertively.

 Volunteer will be entitled to a free drink from the bar. Each show (rota) requires a commitment of approx. 5 hours. A minimum number of rotas across the year is not required.

Stewards mostly work in pairs, and do lots of different things in their shift. Best of all, stewards get to see the show. (Although you mustn’t forget that your main duty is looking after the audience, even when the show is on.)

You’ll arrive about forty five minutes before the show, pick up your badge and your torch and say hello to the Duty Manager, who’ll be your boss for the evening.

The shift begins by standing by the closed auditorium doors, where patrons might also ask you questions, such as where the toilets are, or how long the performance is. Before the curtain goes up you’ll move to the doors of the auditorium to check tickets and direct audience members to their seats.

During the show you’ll be inside the auditorium sitting at the front or back, perhaps admitting a latecomer or two. During the interval you might sell ice creams. After the interval, you’ll be back at your seat. After the show’s finished you’ll see the audience safely out of the auditorium and on their way home, pick up lost property or litter and return any abandoned glasses to their rightful place at the bar.

When you’re a steward you really feel like you’re looking after an audience. This role particularly suits people with a ready smile and a knack for making visitors feel welcome.

Our bar is usually open before a performance and during the interval. Our bar volunteers, who usually work in pairs and under the guidance of an experienced Duty Manager, help to open up half an hour before the show and are soon dishing out the alcoholic drinks, soft drinks and bar snacks.

Besides serving and taking the money, other duties include keeping the bar area tidy, preparing pre-ordered interval drinks. Don’t worry if you’ve never done bar work before. We’ll happily show you how everything works. There is no cash handling as we operate a cashless bar, and we use a Point of Sale System (POS) , so you don't even need to add things up!

Working behind the bar is extremely sociable, and you get to chat to lots of different people. So if you’ve ever fancied yourself as a Bet Lynch, a Peggy Mitchell or a Sam Malone, now’s your chance.

Every show needs lights and sound, both rigging and operating. Be the one to ensure audiences aren't sitting in the dark listening to the actors breathing.
